Last researched: 2026-06-04Location: Uganda

Software developer salaries in Uganda range roughly from UGX 800,000 to 2,500,000 per month for juniors, UGX 2,500,000 to 6,000,000 for mid-level, and UGX 5,000,000 to 15,000,000 for seniors at local companies. Remote roles paying in USD can reach UGX 8,000,000 to 30,000,000 per month. These ranges are approximate and based on limited public data. Reliable salary surveys for the Ugandan tech market are scarce, and figures vary widely across sources.

The Data Problem (Read This First)

Uganda developer salary data is unreliable. We need to be upfront about this before presenting any numbers.

Sources like Glassdoor, Levels.fyi, and PayScale contradict each other badly for Uganda. Some show figures that seem impossibly low. Others show figures that seem impossibly high. The sample sizes are tiny. The data is often self-reported with no verification. And many Ugandan tech workers are not represented in these databases at all.

What we present below are ranges based on the best available information, conversations with people in the Ugandan tech ecosystem, and comparison with neighbouring East African markets. Every figure should be treated as directional, not definitive. We have marked specific numbers that need verification.

If you have real salary data from the Ugandan tech market, we would genuinely welcome it to improve this article. The Ugandan tech community benefits from honest, verified salary information.

What Actually Determines Your Salary in Uganda

Your salary in Uganda depends more on these factors than on years of experience alone:

Who you work for matters most. A junior developer at a well-funded Kampala startup may earn more than a mid-level developer at a small local company. International organizations and NGOs operating from Kampala often pay above local market rates. Remote roles paying in USD or EUR can be two to five times local rates for the same skill level.

Specialized skills command premiums. Developers who can integrate MTN MoMo and Airtel Money, build fintech products, or work with AI and machine learning earn more than generalist web developers. The scarcity of these skills in Uganda drives the premium. This is one of the strongest arguments for learning mobile money integration early in your career.

Negotiation matters more than you think. Many Ugandan developers accept the first offer without negotiating. Salary ranges exist precisely because the same role at the same company can pay differently depending on the candidate's negotiation. Do not assume the first number is final.

Remote work changes the equation entirely. A developer in Kampala working remotely for a European or American company can earn multiples of the local rate. The gap between local and remote pay is enormous, and understanding it early shapes your career strategy.

Salaries by Sector in Uganda

Telecoms (MTN Uganda, Airtel Uganda). The largest employers of tech talent in Uganda. These companies tend to pay at the upper end of local ranges, particularly for developers who work on mobile money platforms, USSD systems, and core infrastructure. Benefits packages (health insurance, pension, airtime) add meaningful value on top of base salary.

Banks and financial institutions. Stanbic Bank, Centenary Bank, dfcu Bank, and others run growing technology teams. Banking tech salaries tend to be competitive with telecoms, especially for developers with fintech or security expertise. The trade-off is often slower-moving technology stacks and more bureaucratic processes.

Startups and funded tech companies. Companies like SafeBoda (tech side), Tugende, and other venture-backed startups in Kampala can pay well when they have funding. The risk: startup salaries fluctuate with funding rounds. A well-funded startup may pay above market for six months, then freeze salaries after a difficult quarter.

NGOs and international organizations. UNDP, World Bank, GIZ, and similar organizations operating in Kampala hire developers at rates that often exceed local tech company salaries. The catch: these roles can be project-based with fixed terms, and the work may not advance your technical skills as quickly as a product company would.

Government (NITA-U, Ministry of ICT). Government tech roles offer stability and benefits but typically pay less than the private sector for equivalent skills. The gap widens at senior levels. See our guide to NITA-U and government tech opportunities.

Kampala vs Outside Kampala

The overwhelming majority of developer jobs in Uganda are in Kampala. This is not an exaggeration. If you are outside the capital, your local options are significantly limited.

Some organizations have satellite offices in cities like Jinja, Mbarara, and Gulu, but developer positions outside Kampala are rare. The universities in those cities (Mbarara University, Gulu University) produce graduates who typically move to Kampala for work.

Remote work changes this calculation. If you can land a remote role, you can live anywhere in Uganda with reliable internet. Some developers choose to live outside Kampala for lower living costs while earning Kampala-level (or international-level) salaries. This only works if your internet connection is stable and you have reliable power, which remains a constraint in some areas.

How to Maximize Your Earning Potential

Learn high-demand specialized skills. MTN MoMo and Airtel Money integration, AI and machine learning, DevOps, and fintech development all command premiums in Uganda. Generalist web development is the floor, not the ceiling.

Build a strong portfolio. Developers with deployed projects that demonstrate real-world skills negotiate from a stronger position. A portfolio showing MoMo payment integration is worth more than a CV listing "JavaScript, React, Node.js" without evidence.

Pursue remote opportunities after building local experience. After two to three years of local experience, actively pursue remote roles. The salary jump from local to remote work is often the single largest income increase in a Ugandan developer's career. See our guide to local vs remote pay.

Do not stay at a low-paying job too long. Loyalty to an employer that underpays you is not rewarded in the tech industry. If you have grown your skills and your salary has not kept pace, look for opportunities elsewhere. Two to three years at one company, then evaluating your market value, is a reasonable cadence.

Building the skills that command higher salaries starts with the right training. McTaba's Full-Stack course (approximately UGX 3,400,000) teaches the complete web development stack plus mobile money integration patterns. The Mobile Money Integration course (approximately UGX 280,000) adds the specialized payment skills that command a premium.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are developer salaries in Uganda lower than in Kenya?
Generally yes. Kenya (especially Nairobi) has a larger, more mature tech market with higher salary levels. However, cost of living differences partially offset this, and the gap narrows for remote roles. A Ugandan developer working remotely for an international company earns the same as a Kenyan developer at the same company.
How quickly do developer salaries grow in Uganda?
The jump from junior to mid-level (typically 18 to 36 months) is the most significant percentage increase. After that, growth depends on specialization, company, and whether you pursue remote work. The fastest salary growth comes from combining local experience with remote opportunities.
Should I share my current salary during interviews?
In general, it is better to ask for the role's salary range than to reveal your current salary. If your current salary is below market rate, sharing it anchors the negotiation against you. Research the market range first (this article is a starting point) and negotiate based on the value you bring.
Do Kampala developers earn more than those in other Ugandan cities?
Yes, significantly. Almost all developer jobs are concentrated in Kampala. Developers outside Kampala typically either relocate or pursue remote work. The cost of living difference between Kampala and other cities is real but does not fully offset the salary gap.
