Power BI vs Tableau vs Python Dashboards

For most Kenyan teams already on Excel and Microsoft accounts, Power BI is the cheapest and easiest start. Tableau suits teams that want its chart polish and can pay more per seat. Python with Streamlit wins when you need custom logic, models or no per-user licence, but needs a developer.

The choice in one picture

McTaba runs coding and data bootcamps in Kenya. This guide is written to be useful whether or not you ever join one.

Picture your finance lead on a Monday. She wants one screen showing cash collected, orders delivered and unpaid invoices by branch. Three tools can draw it: Power BI, Tableau, or a small Python app built with Streamlit.

They differ less in what they draw than in who can maintain them, what each seat costs and how they connect to your data. This page is for the HR, L&D or operations manager deciding what to train staff on, not for the developer choosing a library.

If you are an individual choosing what to learn for a job, read Power BI or Python for jobs in Kenya instead. The wider skills map sits in the data science career guide for Kenya.

Licences and prices, as published

Prices below are the list prices each vendor publishes, in US dollars, per user per month, billed yearly. Vendors adjust them and local checkout can differ by country, so confirm at purchase.

Tool and planPublished price (USD)What it means for a team
Power BI Free0Includes Power BI Desktop for one person. Sharing reports with colleagues needs an upgrade.
Power BI Pro14 per user per monthLets people publish and share. Viewers also need Pro in the usual setup.
Power BI Premium Per User24 per user per monthPro plus larger models and more frequent refreshes.
Tableau Creator75 per user per monthFor people who build the dashboards.
Tableau Explorer42 per user per monthFor people who explore and edit existing ones.
Tableau Viewer15 per user per monthFor people who only look.
Python with Streamlit0 for the libraryYou pay for a developer's time and for hosting.

Sources: Microsoft Power BI pricing, Tableau pricing, Streamlit, checked on 3 November 2026. Microsoft's page notes that checkout prices can vary by currency, country and region. Tableau's tiers and minimum purchases are set by Tableau, so ask for a quote for your seat count.

Imagine a team of 12 where 2 build dashboards and 10 only look. On Power BI, all 12 seats sit on the Pro line. On Tableau, 2 sit on Creator and 10 on Viewer. Do your own sum with the published figures and add the build time for each route.

If you want your team trained on whichever route you pick, see our data analytics training for your team.

Skills each tool asks of your staff

Power BI

A person who is comfortable with Excel pivot tables can build a first report in an afternoon. The harder skills are the data model (how tables relate) and DAX, its formula language. Plan a few weeks of practice before someone is trusted with the monthly board pack.

Tableau

Tableau rewards visual thinking. Drag a field onto a canvas and a chart appears. Staff with no Microsoft habits often find it more natural. Its calculations use their own syntax, so Excel formulas do not carry over directly.

Python and Streamlit

Here the dashboard is code. Someone writes pandas to prepare the data and Streamlit to show it. The skills are the ones taught in the pandas tutorial using a Nairobi shop's sales data. Fewer of your staff will qualify, but the ones who do can build anything.

Microsoft 365 fit

If your staff already sign in with Microsoft accounts and live in Excel and Teams, Power BI feels like a neighbouring room. Excel files, SharePoint folders and Teams channels connect to it directly. Check what your current Microsoft plan includes before buying seats, since bundles change.

When Python (Streamlit) wins

Choose Python when the dashboard must do something a drag-and-drop tool cannot.

  • Custom logic. A rule such as "flag any M-Pesa payment within two minutes of a reversal" is a few lines of code.
  • Models inside the page. A forecast or fraud score computed live, then shown beside the numbers.
  • Many viewers, few builders. A hosted Streamlit app has no per-viewer licence. You pay for hosting once.
  • Your own data sources. Daraja callbacks, a WhatsApp inbox or a Postgres database connect through ordinary code.

The cost is a developer. If nobody on your team can maintain the app, it will break the week that person leaves. Our own programme teaches Power BI and Streamlit in the same phase (Data Handling, EDA and Business Intelligence), because teams often need both. If you want us to build a dashboard for you, that is studio work, not training.

Before any tool, check the data going into it. The data quality checklist for Kenyan teams comes first.

Decision table

If your team...Start with
Lives in Excel and Microsoft accounts, with a small budgetPower BI
Has many viewers who only look, and a few buildersPower BI or Streamlit, compared with the Tableau Viewer price
Wants polished visual exploration and has analysts who like itTableau
Needs models, custom rules or live data feedsPython with Streamlit
Has no developer and no analyst yetPower BI, plus training

Who should choose Tableau instead of us (and of Power BI)

We teach Power BI and Python, so be wary of our bias. Tableau is the better pick in several cases.

  • Your analysts already know it. Retraining skilled people to save a licence fee rarely pays.
  • Your parent company or a major client uses it, and reports must match.
  • Your work is visual exploration of messy data, and chart finish matters to your audience.
  • You are not tied to Microsoft accounts and see no benefit from that fit.

In those cases, buy Tableau seats and train on that. For everyone else, run a two-week trial of Power BI Free with one real report before spending anything. When you are ready for staff training on the tool you chose, our data analytics training for your team covers Power BI and Python.

Key Takeaways

  • ✓Power BI is the usual start for Excel-based teams; check current prices on Microsoft's page.
  • ✓Tableau fits visual-first teams and existing Tableau skills, at higher per-seat list prices.
  • ✓Python with Streamlit has no per-viewer licence but needs a developer.
  • ✓Trial with one real report before buying seats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Power BI cheaper than Tableau?
On published list prices, Power BI Pro at 14 US dollars per user per month is below every Tableau tier, which run from 15 to 75. Seat mix and negotiated deals change the real total.
Can a team use Power BI for free?
One person can build reports with the free tier and Power BI Desktop. Sharing with colleagues needs a paid licence such as Pro.
Is Streamlit a replacement for Power BI?
Only if you have a developer. Streamlit gives more control and no per-viewer licence, but it needs code and someone to maintain it.
Which tool should we train staff on first?
Power BI for most Kenyan offices that already use Excel and Microsoft accounts. Add Python for the one or two people who build models or custom checks.
