Rubavu (also known as Gisenyi) is a lakeside city on Rwanda's western border with the DRC. It has a growing tourism scene along Lake Kivu and significant cross-border trade with Goma. What it does not have is a developed tech training ecosystem.

University of Rwanda, Rubavu campus: UR has a presence in Rubavu. If formal degree programs are available in CS or IT at this campus, that is one option, though it requires multi-year enrollment. Check directly with the campus for current program availability.

In-person bootcamps and tech hubs: None established as of 2026. The developer community in Rubavu is small and informal. If anything has emerged since this was written, it is likely small-scale and worth verifying carefully before paying tuition.

This is not unusual. Outside of Kigali, very few Rwandan cities have dedicated coding training infrastructure. Rubavu is not behind other secondary cities. It is on par with most of them. The difference is that Rubavu has unique economic characteristics that create specific tech opportunities.

These traders use MoMo on the Rwandan side and different mobile money systems on the DRC side. Building something for this market gives you a real-world project and potentially paying users.

Lake Kivu tourism: Hotels, guesthouses, boat tour operators, and restaurants along Lake Kivu need websites, booking systems, and MoMo payment integration. Most are either not online or using generic platforms that do not handle local payment methods well. A developer in Rubavu who can visit these businesses in person and build what they need has a local client base before they even consider the Kigali job market.

Connecting to Kigali: Rubavu is roughly three to four hours from Kigali by bus. That is a longer trip than Huye or Musanze, so plan for it. Two or three Kigali trips per year for networking and events is more realistic than monthly visits. Between trips, stay active in online developer communities. When you are job-ready, target remote positions or relocate to Kigali with a network already in place.
