Strengths:
Tuition: Government sponsorship ~UGX 1,500,000/year. Private entry ~UGX 2,000,000 to UGX 4,000,000/year.
Limitations: Heavy on theory, lighter on practical modern development. Curriculum updates lag behind industry changes. Large class sizes, especially in lower years, limit individual attention. Competitive admission, especially for government sponsorship.

MUST is Uganda's leading science and technology university outside Kampala. Located in Mbarara (western Uganda), it offers computing programs within its Faculty of Science.
Programs offered: Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, and related programs.
Strengths:
Tuition: Government sponsorship available. Private entry generally lower than Makerere. Total costs benefit from Mbarara's lower living expenses.
Limitations: Smaller tech ecosystem around Mbarara compared to Kampala, which limits internship and networking opportunities. Computing department is smaller than CoCIS. Less research output in computing specifically.
Best for: Students from western Uganda who prefer to study closer to home. Students who want a science-focused university environment. Those interested in health technology, given MUST's medical school strength.

Kyambogo University in Kampala has grown its IT and computing programs significantly. It offers a more affordable alternative to Makerere while still being located in the capital.
Programs offered: Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, and related diploma programs.
Strengths:
Tuition: Generally lower than Makerere. Government sponsorship cutoffs may be more accessible than Makerere for some programs.

Clarke International University (formerly International Health Sciences University) has expanded into computing and IT programs with a practical, career-focused approach.
Clarke strengths:
Clarke limitations: Relatively newer computing department. Less established employer brand compared to Makerere. Higher private tuition for what is a less-known credential.
Nkumba University in Entebbe has an established computing department that has produced graduates working across Uganda's tech sector.
Nkumba strengths:
Nkumba limitations: Less recognized than Makerere for CS specifically. Entebbe location is slightly removed from Kampala's tech hub.
Both are best for: Students who want a computing degree from an established private institution, prefer smaller class sizes, or did not gain admission to Makerere or MUST. Both require the same supplemental self-study as any university program to become job-ready developers.
