Best Data Science Courses in Kenya (2026): Fees, Length, Who Each Suits

No single course is best for everyone. Bootcamps such as Zindua, Moringa and ours suit people who want a job-ready portfolio within months. ALX, Coursera and DataCamp suit tight budgets and self-starters. Strathmore and the Open University of Kenya suit graduates who need a master's. The table below compares fees, length and format.

How we built this list

McTaba runs coding and data bootcamps in Kenya. This guide is written to be useful whether or not you ever join one.

Our founder led software engineering at Zindua School from January 2023 to February 2024.

We sell one of the courses below, so you should know how the list was made. On 3 November 2026 we opened each provider's own course page and copied the fee, the length and the format. Where a provider does not publish a fee, the table says "price not published" and links the page.

The list covers bootcamps, university programmes and online certificates that a learner in Kenya can join today. We left out providers whose current fees or dates we could not find on their own sites that day.

A course is one step on a longer road. Not sure data work suits you? Start with the data science career map for Kenya, then come back with a shortlist.

The courses side by side

Fees are in the currency each provider uses. Read the "who it suits" column first, because a cheap course that does not fit your week costs more in the end.

Our row shows the current facts for our Data Science to AI Engineering programme, and the week-by-week plan is on that page.

Two names you may expect are missing. We could not find a current data science fee on the University of Nairobi's site, or current fees and dates for Africa Data School. Ask them directly and compare the answer with this table.

How to read a course fee in Kenya

The number on the course page is rarely what you pay. Add these four lines before you compare.

Payment plans change the total

Zindua's own table shows the total rising from KES 130,000 paid at once to KES 150,000 over five monthly payments (Zindua School, checked on 3 November 2026). That pattern is common, so ask every school for the total under each plan, in writing.

The laptop

Requirements differ a lot. Moringa's data science page asks for an Intel i5 11th generation or Ryzen 5 4000 processor, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD (Moringa School, checked on 3 November 2026). A laptop and internet. Labs run on Google Colab and Kaggle. Cloud notebooks run the heavy work on Google's machines, which lowers the bar. Before you buy, read what laptop you need for coding.

Data bundles and power

Live online classes eat bundles, and a blackout in the middle of a lab costs you the session. Check whether sessions are recorded. Price your bundles with what data bundles cost for learning to code in Kenya.

The income you give up

A full-time track runs on weekdays. Moringa's full-time classes run from 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday to Friday, and Zindua's full-time track asks for 35 hours a week (Moringa School, Zindua School, checked on 3 November 2026). Our full-time track runs four sessions a week, 10 AM to 2 PM. If a full-time course means leaving a paid job, those months are part of the fee.

Coursera bills by the month, so finishing faster costs less. Coursera says most learners finish the Google certificate for less than $300 (Coursera, checked on 3 November 2026). Financial aid is offered on both Coursera certificates in the table.

Once you have the full cost, the next question is whether it pays back. We work that sum line by line in is a data science course worth it in Kenya.

Which course suits which learner

Match the course to your week and your starting point. Five common profiles:

  • KCSE leaver or first-year student. Strathmore's certificate page asks for a KCSE slip with a mean grade of B+ and A- in maths and English (Strathmore iLabAfrica, checked on 3 November 2026). If your slip falls short, a bootcamp that takes beginners or a free online start may fit better.
  • Graduate with no maths confidence. ALX's Data Analytics track says it needs no coding or advanced maths (ALX Data Analytics, checked on 3 November 2026). Our entry rule reads: No coding, data or maths background needed. Read whether you can learn data science without a maths background before you rule yourself out.
  • Working professional. Look at evening tracks only. Moringa's part-time classes run Tuesday to Thursday evenings, and Zindua's part-time track asks for 20 hours a week (Moringa School, Zindua School, checked on 3 November 2026). Ours runs four sessions a week, 7 PM to 9 PM. Plan your week with how to learn data science while working.
  • Career changer with savings for a few months. A full-time bootcamp buys speed, deadlines and a cohort. Compare the three bootcamps in the table on curriculum and projects, not on brochure photos.
  • Graduate who needs a master's on paper. Strathmore's evening MSc or the Open University of Kenya's online master's. Expect two years.

If you are still choosing between data and code, settle that first: whether to learn data science or software engineering.

Six questions to ask any school before you pay

  1. Can I see the curriculum week by week? A list of buzzwords is not a curriculum. You want topics, projects and tools per week.
  2. Can I see three projects by past students? Ask for GitHub links you can open, not screenshots in a brochure.
  3. What do your job outcome numbers count, and when were they measured? A placement rate without a date and a definition tells you little.
  4. Who teaches, and how many learners does each facilitator review? Code review is where you learn most.
  5. What happens if I fall behind or miss a month? Ask about deferral, repeat sessions and refunds before you pay the deposit.
  6. Is the certificate accredited, and by whom? Some are, many are not. For the record, Mctaba Labs holds no TVETA accreditation. Ask what the certificate is worth to the employers you are targeting.

Any school that cannot answer these in writing has told you something useful.

Who should choose them instead of us

Several of these courses beat ours for particular people. Fairly put:

  • Choose Moringa if you want a part-time pace of almost a year, a fully remote full-time option, or a curriculum the school says it built with Flatiron School (Moringa School, checked on 3 November 2026).
  • Choose Zindua if you want to start soon: its full-time hybrid track takes a new cohort every two months, and its one-payment price sits below ours (Zindua School, checked on 3 November 2026).
  • Choose ALX or Coursera if cash is the hard limit and you can keep a study routine with nobody checking. Find a study group to replace the review a cohort gives.
  • Choose Strathmore or the Open University of Kenya if your target employer screens for a master's degree.
  • Choose DataCamp as a practice gym next to any of the above, not as your only course.

Where our programme fits

Ours is for beginners who want to finish with working models, not notebooks. Each one runs behind an API, a dashboard or a WhatsApp reply, built on mobile money, chama and shop data. It costs KES 140,000 and takes 5 months full time or 8 months part time. Instalments available, confirmed at onboarding.

The 9 phases run from Python and SQL through statistics, machine learning, deep learning, MLOps, real-time machine learning and an introduction to AI engineering. They end in a capstone, with options such as M-Pesa fraud detection, Credit scoring, Customer segmentation, RAG support assistant. Facilitators are Google Cloud Certified Machine Learning Engineers.

The first cohort starts on 11 January 2027, so we have no graduate outcomes to show yet. Judge us on the curriculum and on the work our studio ships. Full details, including the week-by-week plan, are on the Data Science to AI Engineering programme page.

Key Takeaways

  • ✓Compare total cost, not the sticker price: payment plans, a laptop, bundles and lost income all count.
  • ✓Bootcamps buy deadlines and review, self-paced platforms buy a low price, and universities buy a credential.
  • ✓Ask every school for a week-by-week curriculum, real student projects and dated outcome numbers before you pay.
  • ✓Every fee and length in this guide was taken from the provider's own page on 3 November 2026; check again before you pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which data science course in Kenya costs the least?
In cash, self-paced platforms such as ALX and DataCamp cost the least, and the table above lists their current prices with sources. The price you pay instead is discipline: nobody reviews your work unless you find a mentor or a study group.
Do Kenyan employers respect online data science certificates?
A certificate can help a CV pass a screening step, especially at firms that filter by keywords. In the interview, employers want to see what you built and hear you explain it. Treat any certificate as a reason to build projects, not as a replacement for them.
Do I need a degree to join a data science bootcamp in Kenya?
It depends on the school. Moringa's data science page asks for university or college education in a relevant field, finished or ongoing. Zindua recommends a STEM background. For ours: No coding, data or maths background needed.
Is a master's degree better than a bootcamp for data science?
Neither is better for everyone. A master's takes about two years and carries weight with employers that screen by qualification. A bootcamp takes months and focuses on projects you can show. Pick by the jobs you want: read ten adverts and note what they ask for.
