Is a Data Science Course Worth It in Kenya? The Payback Maths

It can be, if the course gets you into paid data work and you finish it. Add the fee, a laptop, data bundles and any income you give up. Divide that total by the monthly pay rise you can realistically expect. The answer is your payback period in months. No course can promise the job.

What "worth it" means here

McTaba runs coding and data bootcamps in Kenya. This guide is written to be useful whether or not you ever join one.

We sell a data science course, so we will show every number and where it came from. You can redo the sum with your own figures and reach your own answer.

"Worth it" here means one thing: does the money come back, and how fast? Whether you will enjoy the work is a separate question. The quickest test for that is a month of cleaning real data, which we cover near the end.

The answer depends on who you are today. Take a fresh graduate with no income, a shop attendant on a small wage and an accountant on a good salary. The same course gives each a different answer. If you have not yet mapped the roles and routes, read the data science career map for Kenya first.

What entry-level data jobs pay in Kenya

Start with the hard part: Kenyan employers rarely print the salary. All 41 results for "data analyst" on BrighterMonday showed the pay as "Confidential" (BrighterMonday, checked on 3 November 2026). So we lean on salary surveys, and their samples are small.

Source Role and level Figure Per month Sample
PayScale Data analyst, under 1 year KSh 605,786 a year, total pay About KSh 50,482 24 reports
PayScale Data analyst, 1 to 4 years KSh 503,357 a year, total pay About KSh 41,946 101 reports
Paylab Data scientist, middle 80% of earners KES 51,664 to KES 195,546 a month, gross As shown Fewer than 20 respondents
KNBS Everyone in private sector information and communication, 2025 KSh 1,438,060 a year, average About KSh 119,838 Official statistics, all job levels

Sources: PayScale Kenya, data analyst, Paylab Kenya, data scientist, KNBS Economic Survey 2026, Table 3.7, checked on 3 November 2026. Monthly figures are the yearly ones divided by 12.

That is the pay any course, including our Data Science to AI Engineering programme, has to be weighed against.

Read the table with care. PayScale's newest analysts report more than its analysts with up to four years' experience, which is what small samples do. The KNBS figure averages everyone from junior technicians to chief technology officers, so it is not a starting salary. All four are before PAYE, NSSF, SHIF and the housing levy, so take-home pay is lower.

The full cost, including what people forget

The fee is the line everyone sees. Three more lines decide the real cost.

A laptop

A laptop and internet. Labs run on Google Colab and Kaggle. Cloud notebooks do the heavy lifting, so a modest machine copes with our labs. A Nairobi seller lists a refurbished HP EliteBook 820 G3 with a Core i5, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD at KSh 22,800. A new Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 with 16GB of RAM sits at KSh 85,500 (Potent, EliteBook, Potent, IdeaPad, checked on 3 November 2026). Some schools ask for 16GB, so check the spec before you buy. Shopping second hand? Read how to buy a second-hand laptop in Nairobi.

Data bundles

Live sessions and cloud notebooks run on your connection. Safaricom's bundle page lists 15GB for 30 days at KSh 2,000, though the page was last updated in February 2023 (Safaricom data bundles, checked on 3 November 2026). Dial *544# for today's price. Compare options in what data bundles cost for learning to code in Kenya.

Fares and time

Our programme meets in person in Nairobi on Saturdays. Add your return fare for each Saturday you attend, and the hours on the road.

Income you give up

Our full-time track runs four sessions a week, 10 AM to 2 PM for 5 months. If that means leaving a job or a hustle, the lost pay belongs in the cost. The part-time track avoids that but takes 8 months.

Here is the cash cost before any lost income, using the cheaper laptop and one 15GB bundle a month:

Line Part time (8 months) Full time (5 months)
Fee KES 140,000 KES 140,000
Refurbished laptop KES 22,800 KES 22,800
Bundles at KES 2,000 a month KES 16,000 KES 10,000
Cash cost KES 178,800 KES 172,800

Sources: fee from our programme facts; Potent for the laptop; Safaricom for bundles, checked on 3 November 2026. Fares and lost income are yours to add.

The payback maths, worked through

The sum is one line. Use take-home pay if you can, because tax and deductions come out of both salaries.

payback_months = total_cost / (new_monthly_pay - current_monthly_pay)

To stay cautious, each example below uses the lower PayScale average from the table, about KSh 41,946 a month, as the new pay (PayScale Kenya, checked on 3 November 2026). The current incomes are made up to show the method. Swap in your own.

A fresh graduate with no income, part time

For example, a graduate earning nothing now pays the part-time cash cost of KES 178,800. If a first job pays KES 41,946 a month, the sum is 178,800 / 41,946, which is 4.3 months of gross pay.

A shop attendant, part time

For example, a shop attendant on KES 25,000 a month keeps the job while studying part time. The pay rise is 41,946 minus 25,000, or KES 16,946. Payback is 178,800 / 16,946, about 10.6 months.

For example, if that first job paid the bottom of Paylab's data scientist band instead, KES 51,664, the same sum falls to about 6.7 months.

Someone who leaves a job to study full time

For example, a person on KES 30,000 a month leaves to study full time for 5 months. Lost pay is KES 150,000, so the total cost becomes KES 322,800. The pay rise is KES 11,946, so payback takes about 27 months. Full time is fast to finish and slow to repay when it costs you a salary.

A professional already on a good salary

For example, an accountant on KES 150,000 a month earns more than any entry figure in the table. At entry-level data pay the course never pays back in cash. It can still make sense if it moves that accountant into a better-paid analytics role inside finance, where domain knowledge counts. Run the sum on that role's pay, not on a junior analyst's.

What the sums leave out

  • The job search. Payback starts on your first payday, not on graduation day. Budget for a search of several months: bundles, fares to interviews and printing.
  • Not finishing. A course you abandon in month three pays back nothing. Ask about deferral, repeat sessions and refunds before you pay.
  • Growth after year one. Paylab reports that data scientists with five years' experience earn about KES 140,933 a month (Paylab Kenya, checked on 3 November 2026). Early pay is the floor of the sum, not the whole of it.
  • Borrowing. If you borrow the fee, add the interest to the total cost. Daily mobile loans are a costly way to fund months of study.
  • Gains that are not cash. SQL and dashboards help in the job you already have, in finance, sales or operations, even without a new title.

Test the interest before you pay anyone

The cheapest way to cut risk is to find out early whether you like the work. Spend one month on this before any fee:

  1. Download your own M-Pesa statement and load it into Google Sheets.
  2. Clean it: split the date and time, pull out the amounts, group the payees.
  3. Answer one question with a chart, such as "which week of the month empties my wallet?"
  4. Repeat the same steps in Python with a free notebook.

A month of ALX's All Access plan costs $5. DataCamp's free tier opens the first chapter of every course (ALX All Access, DataCamp pricing, checked on 3 November 2026). If a month of messy data bores you, a long course will too. If it hooks you, compare paid options in which data science courses in Kenya suit which learner.

When a course is not worth it

Be honest with yourself on these. Any one of them can sink the sum.

  • You cannot find the hours. A part-time track still asks for evenings every week for months. Map your week first with how to learn data science while working.
  • You want a promise. No school can promise you a job or a salary. A school that does is selling the promise, not the skills.
  • You would rather build apps. If dashboards and models leave you cold, read whether to learn data science or software engineering before you choose.
  • The fee would come from high-cost credit. Start with the free month above and save towards the fee instead.

Our numbers, in one place

So you can run the sum on us: the fee is KES 140,000. Instalments available, confirmed at onboarding. The course takes 5 months full time or 8 months part time, and the next cohort starts on 11 January 2027. No coding, data or maths background needed.

Our first cohort has not graduated yet, so we publish no job outcomes and promise none. What we can show is the week-by-week curriculum, from Python to deployed models and AI engineering, on the Data Science to AI Engineering programme page.

Key Takeaways

  • ✓Payback months equal the full cost divided by the monthly pay rise, and both sides of that sum depend on you.
  • ✓Kenyan data adverts rarely show pay, and salary surveys have small samples, so use cautious figures.
  • ✓Count the laptop, bundles, fares and any lost income, not just the fee.
  • ✓Spend a month cleaning your own data before you pay anyone; it is the cheapest test of whether the work suits you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to earn back a data science course fee in Kenya?
It depends on what you earn now and what your first data job pays. Divide the full cost, including a laptop, bundles and any lost income, by the monthly pay rise. The worked examples in this guide run from about 4.3 months for someone with no income to about 27 months for someone who leaves a salary to study.
Can I learn data science for free in Kenya?
The material is free online, and free notebooks run on a modest laptop. What a paid course adds is structure, deadlines and someone who reviews your work. If you can supply those yourself, through a study group or a mentor, the free route can work.
What if I finish a course and do not get a data job?
Plan for a search of several months and keep shipping small projects while you apply. SQL, Python and dashboards still help in finance, sales and operations roles. No course can promise a job, so judge a course on what you will be able to build, not on promises.
Should I borrow to pay for a data science course?
Only after you add the interest to the total cost and rerun the payback sum. Avoid daily mobile loans for a fee you will repay over months. Ask the school what payment plans it offers, and test your interest with a cheap month first.
